Discovering Sewing for Fun

Do you sew? If you do, and have been sewing for years as I have, then like me, you may sometimes be amazed at how much the sewing world has changed since we were young! I was reminded of this only recently, when I discovered the Brother SE270D Computerized Sewing and Embroidery Machine.

When I was a girl, my mother sewed constantly: clothes, accessories, household items and more. In those days, girls were expected to know how to sew, because doing so was a way to save money.

I also learned how to sew, but by the time I became an adult, sewing had lost its popularity as a way to create garments economically, and the idea of something being “home-made” was not a compliment. Plus, with the rise of outlets and discount stores, it was often possible to buy an item cheaper than you could make it anyway, so sewing seemed a bit pointless.

But my outlook changed when I became a mother, and my latent sewing genes emerged. It would seem that I had a hidden artistic side yearning for the creative challenge of making beautiful and fun things. And apparently at the same time, alot of other people began to think the same thing, as crafts in general, and sewing in particular began to experience a resurgence. Suddenly, people realized that it was very satisfying to create something “hand-made”.

So the world of sewing creatively, as opposed to sewing out of economic necessity, was opened for me and millions of others as well. We all learned that sewing is fun, relaxing, and a wonderful way to keep the creative juices flowing. We sew because, unlike our mothers who sewed because they had to, we want to!

And this sewing world we are in now is certainly not that of our mothers! Sewing machines, for example, have come a long way from the basic running stitch! Our machines are now computerized, providing endless versatility, a wide variety of stitches and patterns, and even embroidery options.

The Brother SE270D Computerized Sewing and Embroidery Machine is a great example of an “all-in-one machine”. With 97 embroidery designs there is an unbelievable amount of versatility to this machine. There are also 5 built-in embroidery monogram fonts in 3 different sizes that allow the sewer to create a wide variety of emblems, logos, or insignias. The possibilities are endless as is the fun!

Of course, sewing can reap financial rewards: you can save money making your own garments, and you can generate income making or altering them for others. But for me, as for many others I suspect, the greatest reward from sewing comes from the joy of making a beautiful and special item.
