File Extension PDF Overview
PDF stands for Portable Document Format and was developed by the co founder of Adobe Systems who called it Camlet which later developed into the Portable Document Format file extension. This file format can be used to view documents in two dimensions and the best part about a PDF file is that it can be represented easily without the help of software, hardware or an operating system backing it up. But that does no mean that a PDF document is less than an ordinary text document. It includes text, fonts, images and two dimensional vector graphics. All these together make up a PDF document. A PDF document can be read or created by anyone without having to pay any royalties to Adobe Systems. Although the patents for PDF documents belong to Adobe Systems it does not essentially mean that you have to pay up every time you read or write a PDF file.
There are several applications that are now available on the internet that are used to open PDF files. These are Scribd which is used for viewing and storing the files, Pdfvue which can be used to edit these files online and Zamzar which is used for conversion of these files. The new Mac OS X uses the PDF file format instead of the earlier PICT format which was being used in the previous version, Mac OS. There are some desktop printers which can be used to print PDF files directly without converting them. Most of the latest browsers like the recent version of Safari are opened using the PDF file format. Quartz also takes its inspiration from the PDF format and bases its imaging model on it. So PDF files can now be used for myriads of tasks and have become one of the most essential file formats of today.
